Cancer Research UK say that our lifetime risk of cancer has now risen from 1 in 3 to 1 in 2! That means that half of us can now expect to get the diagnosis of this largely incurable illness along with the extremely expensive medical solutions of chemo- and radiotherapy, which are in themselves carcinogenic.
What on earth have we done to our environment to create this level of cancer in human beings?
For a healthy cell to become a cancer cell it must go through 6 levels of mutation. (For those with a genetic pre-disposition this can be just 2.)
The huge rise in cancer levels being caused by genetic mutation and disordered cell growth indicates that our health is breaking down as fast and dangerously as the breakdown in our planetary ecology.
The relationship with cancer and the environment is fundamental. The micro-environment of our cells and genes entirely reflects the macro-environment in which we live, eat, breathe, drink, sleep and work. The disruptive toxic environmental effects of persistent chemicals, hormone disruptors, carcinogens in food, household, gardening and beauty products, poor food, water and air quality are augmented by the damage caused by non-ionising electromagnetic radiation, low-density electromagnetic fields and sick buildings. And all of these physical threats to physical health are being experienced along with the emotional impact of eco-anxiety, depression and despair causing pandemic levels of mental illness, existential angst and suicide. Stress, anxiety and depression are proven to disrupt our immunity causing both under and over-reactive states. The resulting immune dysregulation is associated at one end with cancer and raised risk of infection and at the other in increased allergies and autoimmune diseases.
Charity Project Leader Dr Rosy Daniel says:
‘The environmental and natural health movements must now come together, and the environmental threat to human health must be placed as high on the COP 26 agenda as the threat to the animals, plants and planet. Lifestyle and environmental illnesses have reached pandemic proportions which WHO have declared as a major threat to our survival and economic stability. They also threaten the capacity of the NHS and social care systems to deliver effective treatment and care. Yet, as the government cuts expenditure on preventive health care by 25%, it has been proven that lifestyle health programmes, natural healthcare, support groups and health coaching that cost a fraction of the cost of medical treatment can prevent and reverse these debilitating and costly illnesses.’
People must urgently become as proactive in relation to the crisis in human health as to the climate crisis. We must stop this silo thinking and bring human health right to the top of the environmental agenda, empowering and educating the public and healthcare professionals to adopt proven methods of restoring the ecology of human health and nature, hand in hand. And yet….October 2021 – Government expenditure on Health and Wellbeing falls below 2% of the health budget!
The BBC reported October 5th, 2021, that current Public Health expenditure has dropped by 25% since 2016 to under 2% of overall health expenditure. This means that obesity clinics, diabetes and cancer prevention services have been cut at the point that these lifestyle illnesses and the suffering they create are rising dramatically. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-58795446
Dr Margaret Chan declares Non-Communicable Diseases major threat to health and global economies The World Health Organisation has declared these ‘non-communicable diseases’ a grave threat to global economies and yet governments fail to summon the political will to address the causes which simultaneously ruin human health and destroy the environment.
European Environmental Agency Environment and health
A clean environment is essential for human health and well-being. At the same time, the local environment can also be a source of stressors – for example air pollution, noise, hazardous chemicals – that negatively affect health. The health of the EU population is also adversely affected by climate change, through heatwaves, floods and changes in the distribution of vector-borne diseases. At a broader level, climate change, loss of biodiversity, and land degradation can also impact on human well-being by threatening the delivery of ecosystem services, such as access to freshwater and food production.” Euopean Environmental Agency www.eea.europa.eu/themes/human/intro
Dr Dean Ornish
Dean is a ground-breaking American Cardiologist who proved that lifestyle changes can reverse the progression of even severe coronary heart disease, cancer gene regulation, type 2 diabetes, early-stage prostate cancer, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and other chronic diseases.
Dr. Ornish’s lifestyle medicine program was the first to receive Medicare coverage and is also reimbursed by many of the major insurance companies at hospitals, clinics, and physician groups nationwide. They are achieving bigger changes in lifestyle, better clinical outcomes, larger cost savings, and higher adherence than have ever been accomplished. www.pmri.org
